Salary: $7,036-7,834/month

Job Description: As part of a team with another attorney in either the Columbia or Kansas City office, primary responsibilities include investigation and preparation of amended postconviction motions and evidentiary hearings in circuit courts throughout the state, under Missouri Supreme Court Rules 24.035, 29.15 and 29.16 as pertains to death penalty postconviction litigation. Intensive investigation of case will require extensive travel, both in and outside of state, including regular trips to Potosi Corrections Center to visit clients. Frequent contact with and use of expert witnesses is also required with this position. Other duties may include, inter alia, preparation of appellate briefs from the circuit court’s denial of the postconviction motion in the Missouri Supreme Court, possible certiorari petitions, preparation of detailed findings of facts and conclusions of law in circuit court, and possible assistance with client preparing, but not representing client in federal habeas corpus petitions.

Skills/Special Requirements: Experience and ability to work with expert witnesses, including mental health witnesses. Ability to obtain and investigate sensitive and personal information from lay witnesses, and to obtain, investigate, analyze, and organize educational, mental and physical health, and criminal/juvenile and other records about the client and family members. Background in presentation of mitigation cases preferred. Substantial experience in criminal law litigation, three years minimum, with experience either in postconviction and/or felony appellate litigation, or felony jury trial work.
