Children’s Defense Team Appellate Attorney

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

  • APD I: $5,000/month (starting salary)
  • APD II: $5,417/month (eligible for consideration after 1 year of successful performance)
  • APD III: $6,036/month (eligible for consideration after 3 years of successful performance)
  • Senior Public Defender I–II: $6,834–$7,283/month (eligible for consideration after continued highly successful performance)

Job Description: This position is dedicated to the specialized appellate representation of children adjudicated of delinquent offenses or children certified to stand trial as an adult. The appellate attorney will be responsible for:

  • Handling all civil and criminal appeals from adjudication hearings in juvenile court, certification hearings, and certified juvenile jury and bench trials
  • Assisting with additional motion and writ practice
  • Researching, analyzing, and interpreting difficult and complex issues of law
  • Attending meetings with both Children’s Defense Teams and collaborating with juvenile specialists statewide

As appeals occur in all three appellate districts of the Missouri Courts of Appeal, some overnight travel for oral arguments may be expected. Office location can be in Kansas City, St. Louis, or Columbia, depending upon candidate preference and office needs.

Qualifications: Must be a member of the Missouri Bar or eligible for bar licensure in Missouri.
