Digital Forensics Investigator

Salary: $37,020–$44,796/year, dependent upon education and experience

Job Description: The Information Technology Division of the Missouri State Public Defender is seeking a full-time Digital Forensics Investigator. The individual will assist the Digital Forensic Specialist by collecting digital evidence from a variety of sources, including computers, mobile devices, cloud accounts, and other electronic equipment. The position is located in Columbia, Missouri, at the Woodrail Center. Duties include:

  • Using digital forensic tools to collect, analyze, and preserve digital evidence from a variety of sources
  • Identifying patterns and trends within digital evidence
  • Preparing documents to report findings and conclusions
  • Maintaining a chain of custody for digital evidence
  • Collaborating with other MSPD team members throughout the state of Missouri
  • Complying with legal and ethical guidelines related to the handling of digital evidence

Travel within Missouri is required, including occasional overnight travel. The individual must maintain a valid driver’s license and have a personal vehicle available; mileage reimbursement is provided. Rental and state-owned vehicles are also available. Other travel expenses are covered in accordance with state travel regulations.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in information technology, criminal justice, or a closely related field; or high school graduation equivalency plus four years of experience in one of the following areas:

  • Activities related to investigations or closely related areas
  • Clerical experience, of which two years must have involved specialized work in investigative activities

Preferred qualifications include experience capturing and preserving data with forensic tools; knowledge of computer and IT systems; experience with mobile devices, social media platforms, and cloud accounts; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing.
