Job Description: Individual assists public defender attorneys by identifying, locating, and preserving case evidence necessary to the criminal defense of a client. The position is housed in the Central PCR Office in Columbia which exclusively practices in the post conviction area, both in death penalty and non-death penalty cases. The position may require assistance in death penalty cases when appropriate. Duties include locating and interviewing witnesses; gathering, assembling and preserving evidence for use in post conviction cases in the circuit courts; preparing reports; serving subpoenas; meeting with clients; and assisting during post conviction hearings.

Extensive travel within Missouri is required, including occasional overnight travel. The investigator is required to maintain a valid drivers license and have a personal vehicle available with reimbursement for mileage. Use of a rental vehicles are available as well as a state owned vehicle. Other travel expenses are covered in accordance with state travel regulations.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, journalism, social work or closely related field OR high school graduation equivalency plus four years of experience in one of the following areas: 1) activities related to investigations or closely related areas; 2) four years of clerical experience, of which two years must have involved specialized work in investigative activities.

Preferred qualities include successful previous experience with investigation of criminal cases, including conducting witness interviews; experience with and knowledge of computer and IT systems; experience with photography and video/audio systems; ability to communicate clearly and effectively in writing. Writing samples may be requested of candidates under consideration.
