Salary: $3,085/month

Job Description: Individual is responsible for conducting investigations for indigent clients accused of murder and against whom the prosecution is seeking the death penalty. Duties include locating and interviewing witnesses; gathering, assembling and preserving evidence for use at capital murder trials; preparing reports; serving subpoenas; meeting with clients; and assisting during trial. The investigator will become familiar with both the criminal and sentencing aspects of the capital cases and actively participate in case preparation, that is undertaken with an office-wide team approach. The agency prefers that the investigator possesses or develops the initiative to independently conduct investigations involving both criminal and sentencing issues.

Extensive travel required, which includes overnight travel and some air travel. Depending upon the circumstances involved, the investigator will use his or her personal vehicle with reimbursement for mileage (or the state rental car contract). Other approved travel expenses are covered in accordance with state travel regulations.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, journalism, social work or closely related field OR high school graduation equivalency plus four years of experience in one of the following areas: 1) activities related to investigations or closely related areas; 2) four years of clerical experience, of which two years must have involved specialized work in investigative activities.
