MAIL, CLIENT PHONE CALLS & JAIL TEXT MESSAGING

MAIL, CLIENT PHONE CALLS & JAIL TEXT MESSAGING
Mail, client phone calls, and jail text messages (eg jailmtm.com) are considered routine office expenses that are not reimbursed by MSPD. MSPD will not pay for jail text message correspondence between counsel and clients.

In-custody clients may require collect phone calls or phone calls through Securus or a similar direct-bill phone call provider. For clients in custody in a location too distant from counsel to allow for in-person visits, MSPD has central collect phone call lines that may be reserved by contract counsel for client collect calls; please see our phone call instructions for reserving the MSPD collect call line for in-custody client calls.

Attorneys should take the necessary steps to make sure client calls are private and not recorded, and are cautioned to use professional discretion regarding the confidentiality of phone calls even after being advised the calls will be private and will not be recorded. Phone bills should be reviewed and paid by the SPD before forwarding both the bill and the proof of payment to MSPD for reimbursement. MSPD will not directly pay the phone call provider.
